Imaging Flaws in Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Pipe
Jul 2012 • Chemical Processing • Application Development
Fibreglass reinforced plastic pipe is used in many chemical processes for its corrosion and abrasion resistance qualities. In some instances chemical attack on the plastic causes pitting and deterioration of the pipe wall. Insight™ imaging was used to evaluate the extent of this pitting and the results clearly showed the geometry and depth of the pipe.
BCT imaging is a valuable tool for this type of condition assessment. The geometry of the pitting was valuable and it lead to the diagnosis of the root cause of the pitting as one senior engineer identified that the pitting was characteristic of a backflow of chlorine condensate in the line.
